Mary and Sam were a couple since at least 1940, but they were unable to marry as Sam had previously married a Catholic who would not grant him a divorce. For more than a dozen years, Mary said she lived happily with Sam, but as “the other woman.” They were finally able to marry in the mid-1950s. Mary and Sam built a home on the cliffs of Malibu overlooking the sea, but it tragically burned down in 1957—the second house Mary lost to fires.
